About
A Hidden Gem situated in the quaint countryside in South East Limerick, Lough Gur is home to Ireland’s oldest and largest stone circle, Limerick’s only natural lake of significance, 2,000 historic monuments and landscapes that have inspired acclaimed Royal Hibernian artists, and a pretty thatched visitor centre overlooking the lake. The area is protected by environmental law to ensure that the very essence of what makes Lough Gur a true national Irish treasure is preserved for future generations to come.
To get to Lough Gur it’s a short 20-minute drive from Limerick city and you will come across a wedge tomb, early Christian church and stone forts that all form a natural heritage trail. Enter Lough Gur Lakeshore Park at the end of a winding road to find dramatic lush green hills hugging the lake of Lough Gur. Meander along the lakefront and up a few stone steps to find a perfectly placed hillside Visitor Centre overlooking the lake. With a top hat of thatch and stone front walls, stop a while to admire this architectural impression of early stone age houses that were found across the water by archaeologists once upon a time.
Visitors will find a lakeview gift shop and Visitor Centre interpreting the history, archaeology and environment of Lough Gur. Also on site is a Lakeshore Park Kiosk, lakeview playground and a sprawling 20-acre award winning park. Choose from a short 30-minute indoor tour or a 3-hour walking tour, with options in between. Walking through the doors of Lough Gur Visitor Centre you will be greeted by local guides with a deep love and passion for their local area that they are more than happy to share with you.
