Welcome to Monaghan

County Monaghan is Ireland's best-kept secret. It’s home to Lough Muckno, a world-class centre for angling and wakeboarding; Clones  Lace and Carrickmacross lace, an exquisite technique used in royal wedding dresses over many centuries; round towers, historic houses and the drumlin-dotted landscape which inspired the poems of Patrick Kavanagh. 


Monaghan landscape resounds with the poetry of Patrick Kavanagh. The renowned poet is celebrated in the Patrick Kavanagh Rural and Literary Resource Centre in Inniskeen - a must for anyone interested in the poet's life and work. Monaghan has long been known as an angler's paradise and with several walking routes in the Sliabh Beagh area; it is well worth a visit. In addition, there are 36 looped walks, throughout the Sliabh Beagh region, all of which are way marked and vary in lenght from 4km - 15km.
