There’s no better place to visit if peering into the past makes for your perfect holiday. Top of the must-visit list is incredible Brú na Bóinne with the passage tombs of Newgrange, Knowth and Dowth. These burial places predate the pyramids so it’s little wonder they are a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Meanwhile, in the heritage town of Trim, you’ll find the largest Anglo-Norman castle in Ireland. With its impressive and beautifully preserved grounds, it’s no surprise that it was a location for the movie ‘Braveheart’. But Meath has lots of more modern diversions too, like Sonairte, Ireland’s national ecology centre, activities from hot air ballooning to horse riding, and cultural attractions to beat the band. The Solstice Arts Centre is a favourite.

Other options include the wonderful fishing and walking in the Boyne Valley, site of the famous battle. If you have kids, Tayto Park is sure to appeal. It boasts adventure playgrounds, a buffalo herd and the ‘Teahouse in the Treehouse’. For those in search of playgrounds with tees and greens, head for the famous golf links at Laytown and Bettystown. With their uninterrupted sands, fun parks and cosy eateries, these seaside villages have been popular holiday getaways for over 100 years. Laytown is also famous for its annual beach horserace meet – a cracking day out! If that tickles your fancy, you’ll be pleased to know that you can also enjoy a punt at Fairyhouse, home of the Irish Grand National, and Bellewstown.

As for Navan, it’s easy to see why this town has produced so many famous personalities like Hector Ó hEochagáin, and comedians Dylan Moran and Tommy Tiernan. It’s a lively, handsome and ever-evolving spot. Fitting attributes given that it’s right at the heart of Co Meath.
