Donaghmore Workhouse  and Agricultural Museum

Donaghmore Famine Workhouse Museum is a unique attraction in Co. Laois, which tells the story of the families who lived and died within the Famine Workhouse walls before, during and after Ireland's Great Famine of 1845.

Poet’s Cottage

Located in the picturesque village of Camross, the cottage is named after Patrick Ryan, a poet who lived in Camross between 1750 and 1825. He wrote about the natural beauty and the people of the community.

Aghaboe Abbey

Aghaboe Abbey was founded in the sixth century by St. Canice. Today, a Church of Ireland, which dates back from the 1700s, stands where the priory once stood.

Rock of Dunamaise

One of the greatest monuments and fortresses in Ireland towers over the Portlaoise / Stradbally Road, offering breathtaking views of the county.

Stunning views of the surrounding countryside make the towering Rock of Dunamaise a strategic place to build a fortress.

Round Tower of Timahoe

Timahoe is a quiet rural village located close to the Fossey Mountains Springs area of County Laois. The Round Tower was built some time in the 1100s, on the site of a religious community founded by St. Mochua around 600.

A team of people with disabilities, led by head gardener Paul O'Toole, created the garden for everyone to enjoy. Within the garden, vibrant planting schemes stimulate the sense of sight, while hearing is reached through wind chimes and a humming stone.

Ballghmore Castle

Castle Durrow

One of the great houses of Ireland. Today visitors can wander through the walled organic garden, where a number of old apple trees still produce.

Emo Court and Gardens

The house is surrounded by beautiful gardens and parkland, which was first laid out in the 18th Century and contain formal lawns, a lake and woodland walks with many fine trees and shrubs.

Guided Tours of the House are available (May – September). Gardens are open to the public all year round. Admission free.

Gash Gardens

Gash Gardens covers over four acres and features a collection of unusual plants and fine specimen trees.

Open from 1 May to 30 September, Mondays-Saturdays from 10a.m. to 5p.m. Sundays by appointment. Due to the specialist nature of the gardens, children are not admitted.

Heywood Gardens

Known as the Secret Garden, it features two garden types : the great park created by Frederick Trench in the late 1700s and the small interlocked formal gardens created by Sir Edwin Lutyens and Gertrude Jekyll in the early 1900s.
